Which models is Lexus recalling, and how many vehicles are affected?

Lexus is recalling approximately 3,800 late 2009 and certain 2010 model year Lexus LS 460 and LS 600h L vehicles in the U.S. to address an issue with the Variable Gear Ratio Steering (VGRS) system.

What is the condition that prompted Lexus to take this action?

On certain Lexus vehicles equipped with VGRS, under certain limited driving circumstances the steering wheel may temporarily become off-centered.

If the steering wheel is fully turned in one direction to the end of its travel (full lock position) and then very quickly turned in the opposite direction, the driver may observe that the center position of the steering wheel is temporarily off-centered. The VGRS system will self-correct the steering wheel off-center condition as the vehicle is driven for a few seconds (approximately five seconds).

Due to the limited circumstances in which this can occur, this condition will not occur during normal driving, such as lane changes.

What is the VGRS system?

The VGRS system enhances the relationship between the amount the steering wheel must turn and the reaction of the vehicle’s front wheels, which varies depending on the situation. For example, VGRS increases the gear ratio at high speeds to make handling less sensitive and twitchy. It can also lower its gear ratio to make less turning of the steering wheel necessary while maneuvering at slow speeds.

What can drivers do to prevent this condition from occurring?

Until the remedy has been completed on the vehicle, drivers can take the following steps to minimize the likelihood that this condition will occur:

When turning left or right at sharp intersections, when making a tight u-turn, or when parallel parking the vehicle, the steering wheel may reach the end of travel (full lock position). If this occurs, the driver should slowly turn the steering wheel back in the opposite direction and slowly exit the turn.
If possible, avoid quickly turning the steering wheel in the opposite direction, especially if the steering wheel was turned to the end of travel (full lock position).
Do not attempt to duplicate this condition.

What action should drivers take if they experience this condition?

If the driver notices an apparent steering wheel off-center condition when driving straight, he or she should carefully steer the vehicle and not make any sudden maneuvers. Steering should be based on the vehicle direction of travel rather than the steering wheel position. The VGRS will correct the steering wheel off-center condition automatically (approximately 5 seconds).

How many customer complaints did you receive to prompt this action?

Lexus recently received one customer report in the U.S. regarding this condition and has received no reports of any accidents or injuries.

What is Lexus doing to address this issue?

As soon as the remedy parts are available, Lexus will begin sending notification letters by first class mail to owners of the involved vehicles. The letter will advise owners to bring their vehicle to a Lexus dealer to have the Steering Control computer replaced with a newly designed one at no charge. The computer replacement is expected to take less than one hour, depending on dealer workload.

Will customers have to pay any money out of pocket for this repair?

No. The Steering Control computer will be replaced with a newly designed one at no charge.

Is it safe to continue driving my vehicle until the update becomes available?

Lexus believes that the involved vehicles are safe to drive. If the driver notices an apparent steering wheel off-center condition when driving straight, he or she should carefully steer the vehicle and not make any sudden maneuvers.

Toyota targets $50,000 price for hydrogen sedan due by 2015

Toyota Prius Vehicle Throttle and Brake Systems: Myth VS. Fact

Myth: The start/stop button on the dash will not turn off my Prius while it’s running. Fact: On early to 2010 models with a push-button smart key system, pushing and holding the button on the dash for about three seconds will shut off the ignition system on the vehicle – even if it’s in gear and moving along the roadway. 2010 Toyota Corolla Overview

The 2010 Toyota Corolla was completely redesigned last year. Its good fuel economy, minimal road noise, and forgiving ride have stayed the same. New for 2010 is the addition of stability control as a standard option, and a telescoping steering wheel. There are five trim levels for 2010, below is an overview of specs and models.

Base-Comes standard with a manual transmission, air conditioning, 15 inch steel wheels, tilt and telescoping steering wheel, power mirrors, and a CD stereo with MP3/WMA capability and an auxiliary jack. The engine is a 1.8 liter four cylinder that puts out 132hp and 128 pound feet of torque. Mileage is rated at 26mpg city and 35mpg highway according to their online auto brochure. A five speed automatic transmission is optional. Standard safety features include stability control, ABS brakes, front seat side airbags, full length side curtain airbags, and active front head restraints.

LE-Adds body color exterior mirrors, and power locks and windows. All engine, mileage and safety features stay the same.

S-Adds underbody spoilers, leather wrapped steering wheel, sport seats, fog lights, 16 inch steel wheels, and tow extra stereo speakers. All engine, mileage and safety features stay the same.

XLE-This model also has the 16 inch steel wheels but adds a sliding center armrest, luminescent gauges, wood grain interior trim, upgraded stereo, intermittent wipers, and keyless entry.

XRS-Adds a sport tuned suspension, rear spoiler, chrome interior trim, 17 inch alloy wheels, front strut tower base, and standard cruise control. The engine is a 2.4 liter four cylinder that puts out 158hp and 162 pound feet of torque. Mileage is rated at 22mpg city and 30mpg highway. This is the sports model of the corolla and has tighter handling and more power. All standard safety features are the same.

Notable options available on the S, XLE, and XRS are sunroof, navigation system, and an upgraded JBL sound system with Bluetooth and satellite radio connectivity. Leather interior is only available on the S and XRS models. Cruise control is standard on the XRS and optional on all other trim levels.

In government crash testing, the Corolla earned four out of five stars for its protection of occupants in frontal collisions. Side impact testing resulted in a perfect five stars for front occupants and four stars for rear passengers. The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety gave the Corolla a top rating of “good” for its frontal offset and side impact collision performance.

2010 Toyota Camry Overview

The 2010 Camry has a few new upgrades this year starting with a 2.5 liter four cylinder engine that replaces the 2.4 liter from last year. There are two versions of this engine and the SE model is equipped with the more powerful one. Both the manual and automatic transmissions have six speeds verses last years five. Stability control is now standard equipment across all models. There are four trim levels of the Camry for 2010 below is an overview of all of them.

Base- This model comes with air conditioning, four door auto up/down windows, tilt and telescoping steering wheel, cruise control, full power features, 60/40 split rear folding seat, six speaker CD stereo system with auxiliary input jack, and 16 inch steel wheels. Safety features include ABS, brake assist, stability control, front seat side airbags, full length side curtain airbags, and driver knee air bag. The standard and only engine available on the base model is the 2.5 liter four cylinder that produces 169 hp and 167 pound feet of torque. Mileage is rated at 22mpg city and 33mpg highway according to their online auto brochure.

LE- This model adds keyless entry and an eight way power driver’s seat. The standard engine is the 2.5 liter four cylinder with an option for the 3.5 liter V6 which produces 268hp and 248pound feet of torque. Mileage is rated at 19mpg city and 28mpg highway. All safety features are the same.

SE-This model adds 17 inch alloy wheels, sport tuned suspension, sporty interior and exterior details, more powerful version of the 2.5 liter four cylinder engine boasting 179hp, and the 3.5 liter V6 option. All safety features are the same.

XLE- This top of the line model adds dual zone climate control, power passenger seat, JBL stereo with in dash CD changer and satellite radio, auto dimming rear view mirror, moonroof, Bluetooth phone and music connection, and interior wood trim accents. Leather comes on the V6 model otherwise the 2.5 liter 4 cylinder is standard. All safety features are the same.

These notable options are also available on the lower trim models: navigation system, keyless entry, heated front seats, moonroof, and keyless ignition.

The 2010 Camry also earned five stars in all frontal and side impact categories. The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety gave it the top rating of “good” in frontal offset and side impact crash tests.
