News & Rants: 2010 Land Rover LR4: Car Seat Check

An off-roading powerhouse, the 2010 Land Rover LR4 is known for its ability to tackle mud, snow, sand and more. But how does this luxury SUV handle child-safety seats? We put the LR4 through MotherProof.com’s Car Seat Check to find out.

For the Car Seat Check, we use a rear-facing infant-safety seat, a convertible child-safety seat and a high-back booster seat, all made by Graco. The front seats are adjusted to a comfortable position for a 6-foot driver and a 5-foot-8 passenger. The child seats are installed in the second row and, if available, third row. The booster seat sits behind the driver’s seat, and the infant seat and convertible seats are installed behind the passenger seat.
Here’s how the 2010 LR4 scored in MotherProof.com’s Car Seat Check:

Latch system: There are two sets of Latch anchors in the second row and none in the third. The three tether anchors are located in the middle of the second-row seatbacks; there are no tether anchors for the third row. Both the Latch and tether anchors are easy to see and use.

Booster seat: There’s plenty of room widthwise in both the second and third rows for a booster seat. However, kids using a booster seat in the second row could have problems buckling up independently because the seat belt receptor is spring-loaded and falls flush with the seat cushion. Kids will have to pry up the receptor when buckling in. The second-row head restraints also pushed the back of the booster forward. I didn’t have any of these booster seat problems in the third row.

Convertible child-safety seat: A forward-facing convertible seat fits well, with no need to move the front passenger seat forward. To get a good fit with a rear-facing convertible, the front passenger will have to move the seat up a bit.

Rear-facing infant-safety seat: This long car seat fits easily in the second row.

Do two car seats fit? Yes. Two car seats fit in the second row easily, and two booster seats can fit comfortably in the third row.

Do three car seats fit? Yes. There’s ample space for three car seats in the second row. However, three booster seats won’t fit in the third row.
