2012 Volkswagen Passat’s Rear Legroom Impresses

Monday, October 24th, 2011

The 2012 Volkswagen Passat is a midsize sedan with the rear legroom of a full-size sedan. As parents know, rear legroom matters. Whether it’s because they have to fit rear-facing car seats into the backseat or they’re planning for their gangly teen’s next growth spurt, rear legroom can make or break a car for many parents. In the 2012 Volkswagen Passat, it makes it. In its 2012 redesign, the Passat grew more than 4 inches in length to 191.7 inches. This translated to 1.4 inches of additional rear legroom in the 2012 Volkswagen Passat versus the previous-generation 2010 Passat.  How does it stack up against its competition? The 2012 Passat beats its popular midsize competitors, with only the 2012 Toyota Camry coming close to its spacious 39.1 inches of legroom. Midsize sedans The 2012 Passat even beats the 2012 Ford Taurus, a full-size sedan, in rear legroom even though it’s 11.2 inches shorter than the Taurus. Here’s how the 2012 Volkswagen Passat stacks up against other full-size sedans: Full-size sedans If these numbers haven’t sold you on the Passat’s impressive rear legroom, check out the photo below of my 8-year-old son putting the legroom to the test. With the driver’s seat positioned to fit me at 5 feet 8 inches tall, my 4-foot-5 son couldn’t touch the back of my seat. If I owned the Passat, I know that someday he’d be tall enough to kick the back of the driver’s seat, but I’d hope he’d be somewhat mature enough at that height and age not to do it. That might be a tall order, though. View Volkswagen online auto brochures here

2012 Honda Civic Coupe: Car Seat Check

Saturday, October 22nd, 2011

With its 2012 redesign, the Honda Civic coupe underwent more dramatic exterior restyling than its sedan counterpart. Unlike the sedan, which gained more backseat legroom for 2012, the coupe lost a little second-row legroom. For our Car Seat Check, we tested a 2012 Honda Civic Si. To see how the 2012 Honda Civic sedan performed in our Car Seat Check, click here. For the Car Seat Check, we use a Graco SnugRide 30 rear-facing infant-safety seat, a Britax Roundabout convertible child-safety seat and Graco high-back TurboBooster seat. The front seats are adjusted to a comfortable position for a 6-foot driver and a 5-foot-8 passenger. The three child seats are installed in the second row. The booster seat sits behind the driver’s seat, and the infant seat and convertible seats are installed behind the passenger seat. We also install the infant seat in the second row’s middle seat with the booster and convertible in the outboard seats to see if three car seats will fit. If there’s a third row, we install the booster seat and a forward-facing convertible. Here’s how the 2012 Honda Civic coupe did in MotherProof.com’s Car Seat Check: Latch system: There are two sets of lower Latch anchors in the outboard seats. Though they’re not exposed, but it was easy to move the cushions out of the way to get at the anchors. The 2012 Honda Civic coupe has three easy-to-use tether anchors on the rear shelf behind the head restraints. Booster seat: The Si’s seat bolsters made it difficult for our high-back booster seat to sit upright. The booster leaned toward the middle of the backseat. The seat belt buckles are floppy, making it difficult for kids to use independently. The buckle also kept falling behind our booster seat. Convertible seat: Front passengers should prepare to have their seat kicked a lot if there’s a forward-facing convertible seat behind them. While the forward-facing convertible fits in the coupe’s backseat, there wasn’t much legroom back there (photo below). To fit the rear-facing convertible behind the front passenger seat, we had to move the seat forward, leaving the front passenger’s knees jammed into the glove box. Infant-safety seat: To fit this rear-facing seat, we had to move the front passenger seat all the way forward. This left the front passenger’s knees angled into the center stack. How many car seats fit in the second row? Two Editor’s note: For three car seats — infant-safety seat, convertible and booster seats — to fit in a car, our criterion is that a child sitting in the booster seat must be able to reach the seat belt buckle. Parents should also remember that they can use the Latch system or a seat belt to install a car seat.

2012 Fiat 500 Earns IIHS Top Safety Pick

Saturday, October 22nd, 2011

The 2012 Fiat 500 has been named a Top Safety Pick in the mini-car category by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety. To earn the award, a vehicle must receive the top rating of Good in front, side, rear and rollover crash tests and have an electronic stability system, which is now standard on 2012 models. In the Fiat 500 crash tests, measurements taken from the crash-test dummy’s neck and chest show a low risk of injury. In the side-impact crash test, the vehicle’s side is struck by a barrier moving at 31 mph, representing the front end of a pickup truck or SUV. In side-impact testing, the Fiat 500 driver could fracture his or her pelvis in a crash of this severity. To pass IIHS’ roof-strength test, a vehicle’s roof must be able to withstand the force of four times the vehicle’s weight. The Fiat 500 can withstand an impressive 6.16 times its weight. The award only applies to Fiat 500s built after July, according to IIHS. Models built before July have weaker seat structures that can cause more harm to front passengers. You can check when a vehicle was built on a label affixed to the driver-side doorjamb. The only other mini-car to earn Top Safety Pick status is the 2011-12 Ford Fiesta.

Putting OnStar FMV to the Test

Wednesday, October 19th, 2011

With a suite of safety services and technological features, OnStar, an in-car communication system, is quite the incentive for families considering a GM vehicle. Families can now have OnStar without buying a GM vehicle through OnStar FMV, an aftermarket rearview mirror that can be installed in most vehicles built since 1981. OnStar FMV or For My Vehicle offers many of the same services found in a GM car with an OnStar subscription. I tested the OnStar FMV for a week in an older test car. It was just the makeover the car needed to bring it up to date with some of the latest in-vehicle safety and technological perks. Thankfully, I didn’t use OnStar’s Automatic Crash Response, Roadside Assistance or Stolen Vehicle Assistance (whew!), but there were plenty of features I did try out. Offering Turn-by-Turn Navigation, eNav, hands-free calling and Bluetooth connectivity, OnStar’s FMV was off to a great start. The rearview mirror looked right at home in the car, with no unsightly cords or wires in view. There was nothing to make the OnStar FMV look like some cheesy aftermarket product. What makes OnStar so great is the personal touch of its live operators. In our digital age, it’s not often we get a real person to talk to, and when we do, they’re seldom as helpful and cheery as the folks at OnStar. Upon pressing the button to get directions to my daughter’s new music class, I was greeted by an extremely friendly OnStar associate. When I threw her for a loop by requesting directions to a location not “in the system,” she was able to do the digging to get me to my destination. We even bonded and shared a few laughs over the baby babbles she heard coming from the backseat. Thanks to the excellent customer service from my new best friend at OnStar, I arrived at my destination without fail — and with the warm-fuzzies. For folks who are hesitant to talk to a live person, OnStar’s alternate navigation service is eNav. With it, you can use Google Maps or MapQuest on your home computer to find your location ahead of time and then send the route to your vehicle. I gave this a try and everything worked as expected. I was able to get to the nearest Baskin-Robbins with no judgment. As far as fielding phone calls hands-free from the car, I had issues with both options offered with OnStar FMV. You can use OnStar’s hands-free service, which offers airtime via prepaid packages of minutes, or Bluetooth connectivity to place calls using your cellphone. With Bluetooth connectivity, it was easy place calls with my smartphone. However, OnStar FMV doesn’t download your phone’s contacts, so if you want to place a call truly hands-free, you must dictate the phone number you want to call. These days, I don’t memorize many phone numbers, so first I had to find the contact in my phone, manually hit “send” and then I could talk without distraction. As for the hands-free service offered via OnStar’s prepaid minutes, it seemed antiquated. Why would I purchase minutes just for the car when I have a cellphone? Perhaps this is directed at those who don’t own a cellphone. Another problem with using OnStar’s minutes is a random OnStar telephone number shows up on the phone you’re calling. My husband didn’t pick up his phone when I called from the car because he didn’t recognize the number. Overall, I was pretty pleased with the OnStar FMV. Sure, the turn-by-turn directions sounded a bit like a CB radio in a semitrailer at times, but it was better than no navigation at all or using my iPhone to navigate while driving. It wasn’t until I started looking at OnStar’s price plans that I wondered about its draw for families and whether they would view this service as a value. The OnStar FMV costs $299, but a $100 rebate drops the price to $199. Then you’ll need to choose a subscription plan. OnStar’s Safe & Sound plan, which includes the safety features, hands-free calling service (this price does not include your minutes) and Bluetooth connectivity, costs $18.95 a month or $199 for a year. For $28.90 a month or $299 for a year, you can subscribe to the Directions & Connections package, which includes all the Safe & Sound features and unlimited Turn-by-Turn Navigation. The customer service and personal touch of a live assistant can add value for a person who’s less technologically savvy, but some may not feel it’s worth the extra cost. No matter your style, OnStar gives families an opportunity for a significant upgrade in safety and convenience without having to purchase a new car.

Recall Alert: 2011-2012 Mercedes-Benz Diesel Vehicles

Monday, October 17th, 2011

Mercedes-Benz is recalling 6,872 sedans, SUVs and crossovers because of the possibility of a fuel leak, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. The recall affects 2011 R-Class, 2011 E-Class, 2011 ML-Class, 2011 GL-Class and 2012 S-Class vehicles equipped with a diesel engine. On these vehicles, the O-rings that seal components within the fuel filter may not be effective, allowing fuel to leak onto the road. This could lead to a crash or cause a fire in the presence of an ignition source. Owners will be notified of the recall next month, and Mercedes will inspect and replace the fuel filter if necessary. The repairs will be free. Owners can call Mercedes-Benz at 800-367-6372 or NHTSA’s vehicle safety hotline at 888-327-4236 for more info.
