I can’t believe another school year is upon me and all of a sudden my kids are another year older. They are in second and fourth grade now, with many more activities to attend than when they were younger. Now, I’m the mom driving to and fro from activity to activity. In an effort to cut down or remove altogether those tempting, easy-to-justify trips to the drive-through, I’m searching for perfect car foods. Can you help a girl out?
Yes, I know I can do granola bars and Fruit Roll-Ups. Of course, a sandwich is an obvious choice, but I’d love to mix it up a little. To keep this interesting, here are a few parameters and challenges:
1) I’ve already eliminated the three Ds — anything requiring dipping, dunking or dressing. They’re too sloppy, too tricky for the kids to manipulate and way too messy when things go wrong. If you can figure out how to incorporate them so they’re less of a nuisance, though, go for it.
2) No tacos. Could there be a worse car food? They’re such a tease; you get one thinking, “Hey, it’s got to be one of the original hand-held foods!” Lo and behold, the first bite initiates disaster. Cheese, lettuce and tomato go crumbling everywhere. What makes the taco a worst food contender is that the mess increases exponentially once the kids attempt to contain the mess. The taco tilts, spilling its innards across the backseat.
3) Dairy products must be used sparingly. Frozen tubes of yogurt usually are a crowd-pleaser.
4) Is it possible to do something warm? Something from a thermos?
So bring your “A Game,” people. I will test your submissions if they are up to the task and post the results on MotherProof.com. I thank you in advance for your brilliant suggestions and look forward to trying them out!
