I got a new toy last week, and I can’t tell you how excited I am. Not only is it fun, it streamlines the effectiveness of my mobile mom life. You already know what it is, don’t you?
As a mom who works from “home,” I actually spend a lot of time working from my car in the carpool lane, in my daughters’ dance studio lobby, from Starbucks between pick-ups and drop-offs and, in this specific instance, on the plane. (I was able to use my iPad on my lap, avoiding the germ-laden airplane tray. Thank you, Apple!) In fact, this article was written and posted using nothing more than my iPad. Once I’m finished writing this on the plane, I’m going to watch the latest episode of “The Tudors” that I downloaded via iTunes.
As you may know, it’s hard enough just to get out the door in the morning with kids in tow. As much as I love my laptop, I honestly don’t want to deal with loading it in a separate computer bag and lugging it around while I’m also trying to load golf clubs and swim bags for my girls’ summer camps. Now I can simply throw my iPad in my purse or my car’s glove box and have instant access to my personal and professional email, internet searches (for pics of celeb moms loading babies into their hot, new mom-mobiles) and my word-processing program to tie up loose ends on any one of the four articles I’m writing.
As a busy single mom, an effective calendar is an absolute must. I’ve synced my Entourage work calendar and the Google calendar my ex and I share to schedule the kids between houses and to keep track of their social and extracurricular events. Both calendars show up perfectly in the iPad’s calendar app (big enough to actually see, unlike on my iPhone), and I can make quick changes from the car when I pull into the grocery store parking lot.
Work aside, my morning routine consists of scanning USA Today while my girls are eating their cereal so I can catch up on what’s going on in the world. The USA Today app lets me read articles that I can finish later when I have a free moment in the car. I just started reading Chelsea Handler’s new book using the iBook app – again, eliminating one more thing to get lost under a car seat – and I also have a couple of books for the kids to whip out when we have an idle moment waiting for our table at a restaurant.
The Scrabble app has been a big hit for the three of us while running around all day in the car. The girls play from the safety of their booster seats while I drive and help think of words they could use.
My kids have been using the Brushes app while I drive to create all sorts of fun “paintings” that can be saved as images. Then we use the iPad as a photo frame to showcase their artwork in the kitchen. No more grief from my mom about how bad of a parent I am for not having more of the kids’ art on the walls.
The other app the girls love to use while I’m acting as their chauffeur is the Cookie Doodle app. This lets them choose the type of cookie dough they want, roll it out, cut out shapes, bake them, decorate them and then “eat” them or save them as pics so we can have a constant stream of delicious-looking cookies in the kitchen, even when we were too busy all day in the car to bake any real ones. (Fun or cruel? You decide.)
Like most moms, my life requires amazing juggling skills to make all the pieces work in harmony. The iPad proves to be one of those things I never knew I needed until I had it. It’s a tireless workhorse, a mother’s helper and an executive assistant all in one, organizing my highly mobile professional, social and family life. Good luck finding any other assistant willing to work 24/7 and small enough to fit in a glove box.
